Not every instrument problem traces back to a major component. More often, it's the small, overlooked items: a kinked piece of tubing creating a dead volume, a blocked inline frit adding back-pressure, or a worn fitting causing a micro-leak that slowly destroys your chromatography.
The capillary connections between your modules are critical to maintaining chromatographic efficiency. Old tubing develops internal scratches that create dead volume and peak tailing. PEEK tubing is particularly susceptible to compression damage at fittings. Tightening it too often weakens the ferrule zone. Consider PEEK fingertight fittings consumable items. After repeated tightening cycles, they lose their seal. A slow drip at a fitting is easy to ignore, until you're chasing a ghost peak that turns out to be a contamination path. The inline frit between your autosampler and column protects your expensive analytical column from particulate damage. A 0.5µm frit costs a few pounds. A replacement HPLC column costs hundreds. Replace inline frits monthly in routine-use systems, or immediately if you see a sudden pressure increase.
Sitting at the bottom of your solvent reservoir, these filters prevent particulate from reaching your pump. They're invisible and easily forgotten. A blocked solvent filter mimics pump seal failure: irregular pressure, cavitation noise, and unstable flow. Check them quarterly.
Waste lines degrade with constant solvent exposure. Cracked or leaking waste tubing is a safety hazard and a source of contamination. Replace annually or at any sign of discolouration or brittleness.
End-fittings, guard column holders, and column couplers all wear over time. Stripped threads on a column end-fitting can damage your column inlet, turning a £5 problem into a £500 one.
